Couples are lucky if they get their proposal on camera — it's a moment you want to remember forever! But seeing the pictures left a bad taste in one bride's mouth.
"I saw them and didn’t even recognize myself," 24-year-old Haley Smith told People. "I cried because this was one of the happiest moments of my life, but I was just so ashamed. I didn’t understand how Matt" — her now-husband — "could want to be with someone like me. After seeing those, I knew I needed to change."
Though most brides-to-be drop a few pounds between the engagement and the wedding, Smith wanted a more major transformation.
"My whole adult life, I have struggled with my weight, but this was my highest. I had let myself go and didn't even realize how far I had gotten," the Texas grad student wrote on Instagram. "I was tired of hiding in pictures, getting winded walking across a parking lot, skipping out on activities, feeling lazy, and most of all being embarrassed of myself."
To make sure her efforts would pay off in the long run, she made a few "slow habit changes" rather than crash-dieting.
"I had tried drastic diets or workouts in the past and always failed after a matter of weeks," Smith said. "With the small changes, I would just pick two habits and after about a week or two of sticking to it, I’d pick two more."
These habits included fasting after 8 p.m., only eating out twice a week, starting a fitness Instagram account, buying a Fitbit, decorating her scale, hanging up motivational quotes, and tracking her diet and water intake, according to People. She said this method made real progress "so much more doable."
In an update shared last week, Smith said she's 110 pounds lighter than when she got engaged a little over a year ago — oh, and she got married!
"It is so surreal," she said. “I thought for sure I would get married in a long-sleeve ball gown dress to hide my whole body, but I ended up picking a strapless mermaid dress. I felt so beautiful in it!"
She adds, "Instead of being self-conscious and hiding or sweating the whole time, I was able to feel confident, relax, enjoy my family and friends. ... I honestly never thought I would feel so happy and carefree about myself on my wedding day."
Smith is #bodygoals — and now #weddinggoals, too!
