As model Gigi Hadid continues to promote her collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger, the designer revealed Wednesday that she was forced to wear a poncho in her first Hilfiger show in February 2015 because the casting director thought she was too fat and short. We wish we were joking.
"Our casting director said, ‘She doesn’t really fit because, you know, she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin,' " Hilfiger told Yahoo Style.
They still kept Gigi in the show, but had her wear a huge (fugly) poncho the whole time.
"It covered a lot of her body unfortunately, but it received millions of hits," Hilfiger added.
OK, so it's no shocker that casting directors look for very specific body types when selecting models for shows, but if Gigi freaking Hadid doesn't meet their standards, we don't even want to know where that leaves the rest of us. (Probably somewhere between "chopped liver" and "literal trolls.")
Apparently Hilfiger was able to make amends with Hadid, because she later walked front and center (in a bikini) at the designer's next show in September; they also went on to create that aforementioned Gigi x Tommy collection together, Cosmopolitan notes.
After his interview with Yahoo Style dropped, Hilfiger released a statement to clarify what he meant about Hadid's weight and height.
"The casting people put Gigi in the poncho, and I was not happy. I was saying, 'Don't hide her body.' Even though the poncho ended up being the best-selling piece, I was very unhappy," he wrote, according to Page Six. "The suggestion that I thought she wasn't thin enough upsets me to no end. Gigi is the epitome of perfection.
"I am proud to have her as the face of my brand and proud to have her collaborate with me. There’s no other girl like her in the entire fashion world — not only because of her beauty, but because of her style," he continued.
It's hard out there for a model, apparently! (But at least they get paid a pretty penny.)
