Mind Hacks to Deal with Toxic or Negative People

Negativity is interesting. For one thing, it doesn’t really do anyone much good to have a negative mindset. The fascinating thing is there are still a lot of people who battle with being that way.

And just what are some of the consequences of being a negative type of individual? Negativity can make you moody, hard to deal with, argumentative, problematic and there are even studies that indicate it can produce toxins in your blood stream.

These are great reasons to put as much effort as you can into being a positive person. A part of what that requires is staying around optimistic, confident, and happy-as-much-as-possible people.

Sometimes that can be easier said than done, so here are some tips to make dealing with negativity a lot easier to handle.


1. Choose your topics of conversation wisely

Negative people usually have a glass-half-empty outlook on life. As a result, they don’t tend to look on the bright side of things in conversation. This is why it’s a good idea to avoid topics where you know they might not have a positive outlook or the two of you may be so differing in opinions that it could lead to a heated debate. You’ve probably heard that it’s wise to avoid topics like politics and religion with people (especially those you are not close to). This is even more so the case with negative folks. They’re rarely going to have a lot of good to say, and in a debate, you’re almost sure to never win.


2. Set healthy boundaries

Eleanor Roosevelt once said that no one can make you feel inferior without your consent. If we were to put our own spin on that saying, no one can make you feel down without your permission either. Negative people can be draining, but only if you allow them to drain you. If you know ahead of time what your limits are---how much time you’re willing to spend, how deep into a conversation you’re willing to go, etc.---you can avoid walking away feeling worse than when you first approached a negative individual.


3. Don't nitpick

A particular definition of negative is going to illustrate this point beautifully: “lacking in constructiveness, helpfulness, optimism, cooperativeness, or the like”. Negative people are not concerned with having the facts or being productive so much as just being plain ole negative. And since they lack in things like optimism and cooperation, why get caught up in a game of nitpicking and senseless banter? It’s not worth it. It never will be.


4. Avoid one-on-one interaction as much as possible

If you already know that negative people are the equivalent of fingernails on the chalkboard for you, why subject yourself to unnecessary torture? You can prevent this from happening by avoiding one-on-one conversations as much as possible. Deal with negative people in a group setting instead. You won’t look like you’re avoiding them and they won’t have only you to irritate. It’s a win/win all the way around.


5. Try to influence, not change them

Hey, you’re only going to frustrate yourself if you try to change a person; especially a negative individual. The best you can do for them is to be positive and upbeat and offer uplifting ways of seeing things other than through the lens of gloom and doom. With any luck, your good vibes just might rub off on them. Just by being a ray of sunshine instead of a buzzkill.
