The decent human beings of America have been doing their best to identify as many of the Nazis that showed up in Charlottesville as possible, and one of those definitely picked out of the crowd is Pete Tefft.
Now, with his positive ID, even his own family is now disowning him as strongly as possible.
As you can see, Pete wasn’t being shy about his affiliations during the protests that left three dead and 20 more injured. But as hurtful as his beliefs and actions are for the country as a whole, they are exponentially worse for his family.
“I, along with all of his siblings and his entire family, wish to loudly repudiate my son’s vile, hateful, and racist rhetoric and actions,” said his father Pearce Tefft. “I have shared my home and hearth with friends and acquaintances of every race, gender, and creed. I have taught all of my children that all men and women are created equal. That we must love each other all the same.”
According to a nephew of Pete’s, the father is taking all of this incredibly hard, as it makes him feel like he’s failed as a parent. Not that the family’s been unaware of Pete’s hateful views – according to Pearce, his son once said at home, “'The thing about us fascists is, it’s not that we don’t believe in freedom of speech. You can say whatever you want. We’ll just throw you in an oven.'”
“Peter, you will have to shovel our bodies into the oven, too," replied the father in the same statement. "Please son, renounce the hate, accept and love all.”
The inspiration for this statement – apart from seeing his son at a rally full of racists – was that other members of the family were being threatened over the bad apple. Hence Pearce felt obligated to speak out for the safety of his non-bigoted loved ones.
So do we have sympathy for this family who’s disowning their son, or blame them for what the young man became?
